  1. In 2021, many scenes of the popular Netflix acclaimed drama “Sea of Silence” and the hot science fiction drama “Western World” just concluded by HBO were shot in the virtual studio. When the LED shows a picture that can only be supported by post special effects in the past, the directors, producers and actors can not help sighing that the LED virtual production technology has made film and television shooting a big step forward.

In August, Netflix (Netflix), South Korea, held a virtual production technology seminar in the local area, and set up a simple virtual studio on the spot to show how film and television works such as “The Sea of Silence” were shot using relevant technologies.

Following the success of popular Korean dramas such as Squid Game, Sea of Silence also won the “Netflix Top 10 Weekly Popular Non English Dramas” list.

This sci-fi thriller dares to take risks in areas that South Korean dramas have never set foot in. It puts the story on the near future end when water resources are increasingly exhausted, with the earth, outer space and the moon as the background. In order to realistically generate an unknown space environment in various immersive scenes, the Korean visual effects studio Westworld built a 30 lunar surface scene, which was connected to the virtual environment using led video walls before shooting. The ICVFX technology of Unreal Engine makes it possible to seamlessly integrate the management scene and virtual scene.

Son Seung hyeon, CEO of Westworld, said: “We can experience the sense of space in real-time shooting through the virtual production technology combined with ICVFX technology of Unreal Engine and LED wall, which not only improves the shooting efficiency, but also maximizes creativity. We have high hopes for innovative real-time technology. In the future, we also plan to actively use virtual production technology in various projects.”

Seven prime time Emmy Awards, 52 awards, 202 nominations. The Western World 4 produced by HBO, co created by Jonathan Nolan, the nominee of the best original screenplay for the Oscar, uses virtual production technology to create a futuristic Times Square in New York in the LED, making the actors and directors feel as if they are in the scene.

  1. A new TV series, Star Trek: Strange New World, will be released in Star Trek on May 5, 2022. The first season has 10 episodes and will continue to be updated until July 7. Captain Pike, Spock and other familiar characters will drive Discovery to explore the interstellar journey.

In 2021, Pixomondo (PXO) cooperated with William F. White International, the largest equipment renter in the Canadian film and television industry, and successively set up three virtual production studios in Vancouver and Toronto. The new drama “Strange New World” and the fourth season of “Discovery” broadcast in 2021 were shot in the virtual studio in Toronto. In the post epidemic era, virtual production is widely favored by film and television shooting. How to make a virtual shooting environment with LED display? Let’s find out!

In 1987, when Star Trek: The Next Generation first appeared, it introduced a Holodeck – “holographic deck”, which can create the whole universe in a real environment. It is an immersive virtual reality space. Holodeck is a “smart” virtual reality system usually used on the Federal Starship, a technology combining transmitter, replicator and holographic system. In film and television shooting, these programs can create “entity” props, characters and holographic backgrounds to evoke any scene by projecting them into a specially equipped but empty room.

The “AR Wall” virtual scene technology introduced in the fourth season of “Star Trek: Discovery” has been well applied in “Star Trek: A Strange New World”. The so-called “AR wall” actually refers to a visual display wall composed of LED displays, which combines engine technology to create a virtual environment that reacts to cameras. Therefore, the quality of LED display has become the core of virtual photography. The high frame rate, high refresh rate and low scanning of led make its lens performance very outstanding.

The “AR wall” composed of LED display screen, combined with the latest holographic technology and illusory engine, can perfectly present any desired scene in real space. The progress of this technology has greatly promoted film and television shooting. Under the COVID-19, virtual production has become one of the most popular topics at present. With the support of this technology, more excellent film and television works will be produced in the future to feast the audience’s eyes.
